Before the Founding of Arathor
The Alteraci were originally a tribe of humans who dwelled among the slopes of the Alterac Mountains since time immemorable. They were considered uncouth and savage by many of the humans from other regions but were nonetheless unmatched in their bravery and strength.
In the year 2800 Before the Dark Portal (BDP) a human warlord, named Thoradin, claimed the mantle of kingship and set about uniting the disparate human tribes. While King Thoradin believed he could eventually conquer the Alteraci he knew the cost would be high. Thoradin ascended the mountain by himself and challenged the chieftain of the Alteraci to single combat. Ignaeus, Chieftain of the Alteraci accepted the king's challenge. He came forward covered in the red tribal markings of his people. The chieftain was bigger and stronger than Thoradin but the king was able to use the thick fog to avoid Ignaeus' attacks and disarm his opponent.
Rather than kill his opponent he offered his hand in friendship and the Alteraci joined Thoradin's new nation of Arathor.

The Troll Wars
King Thoradin set about building a new capital named Strom. He also had a great wall built to protect the capital from attack by the Amani trolls. Ignaeus became a leading general of Arathor. In the skirmishes leading up to the Troll Wars Ignaeus led expeditions far from Arathor's borders and killed many trolls leading to him being given the name 'Trollbane'. In time the descendants of Ignaeus Trollbane would gain the throne of Strom (or Stromgarde as it came to be known).
Following the Troll Wars Arathor expanded with Alterac City founded by 2,700 BDP.

Alterac Regains Independence
There was no single event that led to Alterac becoming independent of Arathor. Rather, power seemed to slip away from the capital as border regions increasingly handled their own affairs. By 1,200 BDP the Kingdom of Alterac was fully independent. Due to the wild lands beyond its border the kingdom's army was experienced but small as the kingdom remained primarily mountainous with little farmland.
In time House Perenolde gained the throne. Under their guidance the kingdom would remain free and relatively prosperous, if somewhat isolated from world affairs.

The Years Before The First War
In the years leading up to the opening of the Dark Portal Alterac and Stromgarde were engaged in a series of conflicts brought on by disagreement over where in the Alterac Mountains their border was located. Alterac was at this time ruled by King Aiden Perenolde. And while these conflicts did not result in any territorial changes, due to the competent leadership of General Hath, they did create a great deal of resentment towards Stromgarde as well as the other human nations that remained on friendly terms with them.
The combined effect of being an isolated kingdom distracted by regional concerns meant that the first war with the orcs passed by with little notice by the people of Alterac nor its leaders.

The Second Great War
When Stormwind refugees led by Anduin Lothar began pouring into the northern human lands in 4 ADP it became clear action had to be taken. The leaders of the seven human kingdoms met in Lordaeron to discuss their options. This meeting would see the formation of the Alliance of Lordaeron to confront the Orcish Horde. Alterac initially was hesitant to join both out of fear that military victory would be impossible and that the human nations would lose their independence within the Alliance.
Due to the initial battles against the Horde going poorly King Aiden Perenolde concluded he had been right about the Alliance's chances of victory. In secret he began working with the Horde in hopes that he could save his people. This betrayal was discovered and Alterac was occupied by the Alliance with King Aiden Perenolde held prisoner.

Aftermath Of The Great Wars
When the Orcish Horde was finally defeated in 8 ADP attention turned to what was to be done with Alterac. King Thoras Trollbane wished to annex most of Alterac to Stromgarde as compensation for their loses during the war. Terenas Menethil II of Lordaeron was indecisive but favoured of Aiden's son, Aliden, taking the throne. King Genn Greymane of Gilneas backed Aiden's nephew Isiden.
Ultimately, no decision would be made before the Burning Legion returned and sowed chaos across the north. Currently, there are several Alteraci factions active. All of them vie to restore the former kingdom to its proper glory.

Kalimas Rallies The Alteraci
Kalimas Perenolde is from a junior branch of the royal line. There was never any expectation of her taking the throne. However, in 27 ADP she began gathering her allies with the intention of making her claim. She is a young claimant and has no memories of Alterac as it used to be.
